Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to embark on a three-day tour of East Medinipur, beginning Monday, to review the progress of the Jagannath temple construction in Digha. According to sources, she will leave for East Medinipur on Tuesday evening and conduct an on-site inspection of the temple on December 11, returning to Kolkata the following day.
The Bengal government has envisioned building the Jagannath temple in Digha to resemble the iconic Puri temple, with similar height and design. Located on high sand dunes near New Digha station, the temple project has also focused on developing the surrounding area. A significant budget of several hundred crores was allocated for this initiative a few years ago, and the work, managed by HIDCO, is reportedly nearing completion with the boundary wall already constructed.
With assembly elections slated for 2026, Banerjee’s visit to this high-profile project is being viewed as politically significant, signaling the state government’s emphasis on large-scale cultural and infrastructural development.
